Merge Fields when bringing data in from third parties

It would be useful to be able to merge fields together when bringing them in from a third party. Sometimes we change the order of the names or add an extra syllable by mistake and end up with 2 fields in the quelle, which are actually the same one. If there is a already a way to merge, I would like to know how to.
